The Vine system is organized around an Oracle based Vine Open Server. Vine Open Server stores and distributes data among various client applications designed for different tasks and connection technologies:

Vine Server Applications

Vine Open Server

Vine Open Server is the main repository of all a workgroup data. It is a conventional SQL relational database and can be easily incorporated into an organization's other data sources and feeds by using standard SQL operations. The Vine database can be run on Oracle with other applications using the same Oracle DBMS. Vine Open Server is installed and upgraded by Vine Server Setup. Vine Open Server does not include any executable programs or services on the server side. It runs inside the Oracle DBMS like any database application. Vine Open Server uses its own database tables, procedures and packages, which are maintained by the Oracle DBMS.

Vine Application Server

Vine Application Server (VAS) is a middleware solution that eliminates the need to install Oracle client connectivity software on computers from which Vine clients connect to the Vine server database. It uses only the very basic Internet protocol (IP) suite in order to connect Vine clients on various platforms to the Vine server.

Vine Administration Applications

Vine applications access the Vine server database through Oracle SQL*Net or VAS connections.

Vine Server Setup wizard

Vine Server Setup wizard is the tool which allows the administrator to set up a Vine Server Database and perform some basic administration such as entering licenses and creating users and user groups.

Vine Web Administrator’s Console

Vine Web comes with a special administration console which includes tools for day-to-day database maintenance. It can be used from Vine Web and Vine for Windows.

Note that not all database operations (e.g. backup) are provided by this program, so the administrator should be able to use the DBMS as well.

Vine Object Manager

Vine Object Manager is the Vine database customization tool. Using this tool, the administrator can modify Vine objects and whole object sets.

Vine Import Wizard

Vine Import Wizard is a tool that copies data from any standard CSV-formatted file into objects in Vine database.

Vine User Applications

Vine for Windows

Vine for Windows is the core client application intended for the end user. It is a program that provides the main functionality of the Vine system with a graphical, easy to use interface.

Vine can have add-on components which are often licensed separately, for example:

  • Vine Document Manager which enables users to collectively manage and store documents in the database.
  • Vine Phone using which users can control their telephones from Vine and directly use contact data stored in the Vine database.
  • Vine Reporting Module which generates reports designed in Seagate Crystal Reports.
  • Summary View which displays information about an object and its connected objects in an outline view based on a customizable layout file.

Vine Web

With Vine Web, users can query the Vine Database using a Web browser from any platform. In addition, Vine Web comes with a special administration console which includes tools for day-to-day database maintenance.

Vine Web works through an intermediate web server, for example Apache Tomcat, which runs Vine Web as a web application. It serves dynamic content to the user’s Web browser and is implemented using the JavaServer Pages (JSP) technology. Vine JSP pages can execute database queries to the Vine database and prepare dynamic HTML pages which are then transferred to the client web browser.

Mobile Access Using Handheld Devices

Various mobile devices can be used to access Vine database data:

  • Vine Web can recognize that a request for a specific page came from a mobile browser and return a specially formatted, mobile version of that page.
  • Tools such as, Vine Sales Meeting, Vine Sales Calls or Vine Quick Contacts access Vine data from Android devices.
  • Users of hand-held computers can use special Vine replication tools, for example Vine Outlook Replication, to synchronize their machines with the Vine Open Server.

Vine Email Reader

Vine Email Reader works as a Windows service which periodically polls specified mailboxes from POP3/IMAP servers, retrieves emails and their attachments and processes them into Vine events and documents, respectively.
